Aged Care Support Service Common Core Curriculum

Section 1 – Infection Control
An interactive session where trainees learn the importance of hand washing, medical waste management and basic infection control procedures. Trainees are introduced to the world of microbes and micro-organisms. |

Session 2 – OH&S
Trainees will learn in a very interactive session the practical application of OH&S. Topics covered include safe handling of chemicals, using electrical equipment, house keeping, manual handling and risk assessment techniques. |

Session 3 - Communications
An interactive, practical and fun session. The session cover the basics of teamwork, leadership and communication. A range of games and team based activities are used to shoe trainees the importance of communication, teamwork, team interactions and communication.

Session 4 – Support Operations
This session focuses on the theory and importance of operational plans and continuous improvement processes. Trainees are introduced to basic theories in an interactive session.

Cleaning Support Services

Session 1 – Carpet Maintenance
Hands on stain removal, vacuuming & general carpet maintenance, hot water extraction and dry foam shampooing
Session 2 – Hard Floor Maintenance
Hands-on stripping and sealing of hard floors. Reviews the processes and costs of daily maintenance, buffing, re-coating and stripping & sealing floors.
Session 3 – General cleaning applied to Health & Aged Care Settings
The most important training session in cleaning. An interactive class discusses the rotation of cleaning duties, times involved in various cleaning tasks and how to organise personal work priorities.

Laundry Support Services

Session 1 - Quality Control
Introduction to quality control; troubleshooting common problems in laundries. Includes information on fibres, textiles and textile blends.
Session 2 - Collection & Pre-treatment
Covers the importance of linen types, stain identification and stain removal. Hands-on stain identification and stain removal. Introduction to chemicals & pH.
Session 3 - Production - Washing
The theory of stain removal, pH, role of detergents in wetting and emulsification. Applies basic chemicals theories in practical manner to the wash cycle, stain removal and fabrics.
Session 4 - Production - Drying & Finishing
Discusses drying cycles; their relationship to linen fibres and construction & effect of temperature on various fibres.

Food Support Services

Session 1 – Food Safety
Theory of food safety and personal hygiene. This session includes a practical audit of food preparation areas and class discussion on findings.
Session 2 – Kitchen Operations
The Flow of Food, from delivery to consumption. Introduction to the principals of HACCP. Covers basic kitchen cleaning, ware-washing, sanitation & safe work practices.
Session 3 – Food Preparation & Presentation
Session covering basic cooking techniques and the importance of food presentation. Practical hands-on skills in preparing and presenting food.
